Mitzy & Mavis Mouse – Free Crochet Pattern

While mice are definitely not my favorite kind of animal, I love this free mouse crochet pattern! This little mouse is wearing a hoodie, which definitely makes him a bit more likeable in my book.

Free Crochet Pattern for Mitzy & Mavis Mouse

Pattern Specifics

Measurements: Approximately 5.5” tall
Gauge: Not necessary for this pattern; see notes
Hook Size: 4.0mm (G) crochet hook
Other Tools: tapestry needle, stitch markers, scissors
Yarn Weight: Medium (4), Worsted
Yarn Used: Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Simply Soft
Yardage: color A (shown as white): 42 yds, color B (peach): 13 yds, color C (sweatshirt): 29 yds
Other Materials: poly-fil stuffing, 6mm safety eyes

Stitch Abbreviations

st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
SC2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (invisible decrease is recommended for all pieces with the exception of the hood)

Special Stitches

SC2tog (using invisible decrease method): Insert hook into front loop of the first stitch. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch. Yarn over. Draw through the first two loops on hook. Yarn over. Draw through both loops on hook.

Notes

  • Checking your gauge is not required for this pattern. Use a hook that is smaller than the size recommended for your yarn weight. This will ensure that your stuffing will not show through the stitches.
  • All pieces of mouse are worked in the round, with the exception of the hood. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of each round.
  • Head, body, and arm pieces of mouse require stuffing. Stuff each piece as you work to ensure each piece is completely filled.

 Using color A (shown as white):

 R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

 R2-3: 1 SC in each st around. (6 sts)

 R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)

 R5: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

 R6: 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts. (14 sts)

 R7: 1 SC in each st around. (14 sts)

 R8: 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts. (16 sts)

 R9: 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 7 sts. (18 sts)

 R10: 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in next st, 2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts. (22 sts)

 R11: 1 SC in each of the next 10 sts, 2 SC in each of the next 2 sts, 1 SC in each of the next 10 sts. (24 sts)

 R12-13: 1 SC in each st around. (24 sts)

 If using safety eyes, insert eyes between R10 and R11, with 10 sts between. See tutorial photos.

 R14: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 6 sts. Repeat from * around. (21 sts)

 R15: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 5 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

 Fill with stuffing.

 R16: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

 R17: *SC2tog. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

 Cut yarn, weave yarn in and out of remaining sts. Pull tight to close. Tie off and weave in ends.

 Inner Ear (make 2)

 Using color B (shown as peach):

 R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

 R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

 R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

 R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

 Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

 Outer Ear (make 2)

 Using color A (shown as white):

 R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

 R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

 R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

 R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

 Do not fasten off.

 Place 1 inner ear and 1 outer ear, wrong sides together. Using the attached strand of color A, work 1 SC around to secure both pieces together. Leave long strand for securing ear. See tutorial photos.

 Fasten off.

Fold ear together and sew 3 stitches up. This pinched area of the ear will be referred to as the base.

Body

 Using color A (shown as white):

 R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

 R2: 2 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

 R3: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

 R4: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

 R5: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (30 sts)

 R6-8: 1 SC in each st around. (30 sts)

 R9: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 3 sts. Repeat from * around. (24 sts)

 Using color C (sweatshirt):

 R10: 1 SC in each st around. (24 sts)

 R11: *SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. (18 sts)

 R12-13: 1 SC in each st around. (18 sts)

 R14: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (12 sts)

 R15: 1 SC in each st around. (12 sts)

 Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

 Fill with stuffing.

 Arms (make 2)

 Using color A (shown as white):

 R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

 R2: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)

 R3: 1 SC in each st around. (9 sts)

 Using color C (sweatshirt):

 R4-5: 1 SC in each st around. (9 sts)

 R6: *SC2tog, 1 SC. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

 R7: 1 SC in each st around. (6 sts)

 Lightly stuff.

 R8: Fold the piece closed. Working through both sides, 1 SC in each st across leaving 1 unworked st on each side. See tutorial photos. (2 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Feet (make 2)

Using color A (shown as white):

R1: Begin with 6 SC in a magic ring. (6 sts)

R2: *2 SC in next st, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (9 sts)

R3: 1 SC in each st around. (9 sts)

R4: *SC2tog, 1 SC in next st. Repeat from * around. (6 sts)

R5: 1 SC in each st around. (6 sts)

Do not stuff.

R6: Fold the piece closed. Working through both sides, 1 SC in each st across leaving 1 unworked st on each side. See tutorial photos. (2 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Tail

Using color A (shown as white):

Using a long strand of yarn, create a slip knot.

R1: Holding your working yarn and beginning strand, ch 15. See tutorial photos.

Fasten off.

Hood

Using color C (sweatshirt):

R1: Ch 21. SC in second ch from hook and each st across. (20 sts)

R2-8: Ch 1. Turn. SC in each st across. (20 sts)

R9: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 16 sts, SC2tog. (18 sts)

R10: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 14 sts, SC2tog. (16 sts)

R11: SC2tog, 1 SC in each of the next 12 sts, SC2tog. (14 sts)

R12: SC3tog, 1 SC in each of the next 8 sts. SC3tog. (10 sts)

Do not fasten off. Fold shorter ends together and sew to join (along yellow line illustrated below), creating the top of the hood.

Pick up working end of yarn and SC around the front of the hood (along the red line illustrated below).

Leave long strand for sewing. Fasten off.

Bow

Using color D (shown as light purple):

Wrap yarn around two fingers, 5 times. Tie yarn around middle to create cinch.

Assembly & Finishing

Attach head to body so that the nose is facing straight out; attaching body to approximately R10-14 of the bottom of the head.

Attach arms to the sides of the body between R13 and R14.

Attach feet to bottom, front of body between R3 and R4, with 2 sts between each foot.

 Using the base of the ears, attach to the side of the head between R13 and R16, keeping the base in line with the eyes.

Attach hood behind head. Add hoodie strings under head, leaving 2 sts between the strands.

 Attach tail to back of body, between R5 and R6.

 For a girl mouse, attach bow in front of left ear.

*Note: Safety eyes and noses pose a choking risk for babies; therefore, if making this toy for a baby, I recommend using yarn, felt, or embroidered details.

Tips & Tricks

  • Use pins to hold the pieces while sewing to make sure that your placement is even.
  • Use the invisible decrease method for your SC2tog stitches so that those decreases blend in with your single crochet stitches.

Alterations

  • Add a few color changes to create stripes in the mouse’s hoodie!
  • Use a chunky yarn like Parfait Chunky to create a larger plush amigurumi mouse! Be sure to use a hook size that corresponds with your yarn. Learn more about choosing the right amigurumi hook size in this article.
